Frugality is one of the most beautiful and joyful words in the English language, and yet one that we are culturally cut off from understanding and enjoying. The consumption society has made us feel that happiness lies in having things, and has failed to teach us the happiness of not having things.

-Elise Boulding

It doesn't follow that a reduction of the quantity of possessions or responsibilities will correspond with freedom from ego attachment. On the contrary, it's quite possible to develop an expansion or inflation of the ego, based on how "unattached" or "spiritual" we perceive ourselves to be. The "spiritual ego" can be a more difficult nut to crack than the the strictly materially oriented ego. While a simple life is preferable for those seeking spiritual enlightenment, it by no means guarantees freedom from attachment.
