On this day when Attorney General John Ashcroft demonstrates government compassion by arranging to let a select audience in Oklahoma watch a ritualized murder on TV and four fifths of the nation clamors for blood, I'm reminded of what Bob Dylan said upon accepting his Grammy Award in 1991, when a parade of forgettable pop stars had already climbed the stage upon which he stood and gave their unqualified support to the elder Bush's impending war show in the desert.

Well, my daddy, he didn't leave me much, you know he was a very simple man, but what he did tell me was this, he did say, "Son, you know it's possible to become so defiled in this world that your own father and mother will abandon you, and if that happens, God will always believe in your ability to mend your ways."
