Fuzzy Transmission from the Grapevine

Does anyone know anything about some recording of GWB from before the 2000 election in which he lays out his plans to invade Iraq? My boss said he read something about it on Yahoo but that it wasn't there when he went back to take a closer look.

I'm not talking about the admission of youthful drug experimentation.

Well, the "Trifecta" one is damning enough. If only the media would hype that the way they hyped Rush Limbaugh's "Wag the Dog" remark as if Clinton had said it.

Just some google searching should uncover it, though it is buried too deep for a casual search as I just tried. If I didn't have to run, I'd search longer.

It seems to come from Mickey Herskowitz, a sportswriter for the Houston Chronicle that was hired to ghost-write GWB's "auto" biography.

Herskowitz gave an interview to freelance reporter Russ Baker about portions of the manuscript that were edited at the request of Karen Hughes.

First hit:

“He was thinking about invading Iraq in 1999,” said author and journalist Mickey Herskowitz. “It was on his mind. He said to me: ‘One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a commander-in-chief.’ And he said, ‘My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.’ He said, ‘If I have a chance to invade….if I had that much capital, I’m not going to waste it. I’m going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I’m going to have a successful presidency.”

All other leads that I could locate were blogs ref-ing the earlier link.

There is speculation that Herskowitz has an audiotape of the conversation, because his quotes are consistent, and recording interviews is standard practice for ghostwriters.

Thanks, man
I forwarded the links to my boss. He's a GWB supporter, and he knows I'm not, though we've never had anything even remotely resembling a heated political discussion.

Re: Thanks, man
I saw this headline on Yahoo yesterday as well, and then couldn't find it even with Google news early this morning.

Thanks!
