No law of history says governments can't retreat from pluralism; repression and wanton self-aggrandizement are always options. But a law of history does seem to say that these courses tend, in the long run, to sap economic vibrance. Or, more precisely: the law says that any economic vibrance will in the long run pale by comparison with that in more liberal societies, all other things being equal.

-Robert Wright, author of Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny

...I basically buy the argument of Robert Wright's new book, Nonzero... He argues that notwithstanding the horrors of the 20th century brought on by organization - the Nazi and the Communist, the totalitarian regimes and the mass murderers and the continued prevalence of ethnic, racial, and religious hatreds - that Martin Luther King was right. Martin Luther King said the arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice.

-William Jefferson Clinton, from his Wired magazine interview.
