Quotes from ILIUM by Dan Simmons

I've had the hardcover of Ilium on my shelf for many months. Maybe a year or more. Ever have a book that you fully expect will provide you with many hours of reading pleasure once you get into it because you found it by following links from Amazon.com catalog pages for books which you already know and love to ones unfamiliar to you to which other minds, contoured much as time, temperment and experience have shaped the contours of your own litterary tastes, have posted glowing reviews or positioned in listmania lists that include many of your all-time favorites, so you order it, but then you never actually get down to reading it just because it looks so heavy and unweildy sitting there on your bookshelf, but then one day, for reasons known only to Olympian Minds, you pick it up and read a fair chunk of it and discover that you really like it?

Well, duh!

And so this morning, on a "whim" (?), I started reading Ilium by Dan Simmons.

So far, the story has mostly stuck with the character of Thomas Hockenberry, Ph.D., a long-dead academic scholor resurrected by the gods of Olympus to bear first person witness to the events of the Trojan War. They equip him with technology, "morphing gear and impact armour," that allows him to take the part of supporting characters in non-speaking roles) without altering the course of events.

Hockenberry is standing in a circle of warriors on the beach as Achilles and Agamemnon bluster and posture at one another over who gets which scrumptious slave girl. Both men deftly punch each others ego buttons and wratchet up the anger. Achilles goes for his sword intending to spill Agamemnon's innards when Athena steps in, freezes time for everyone but herself, Achilles, and Hockenberry, and bribes/threatens Achilles into chilling the fudge out.

"Yield!" says Athena.

If you've never seen a god or goddess, all I can do is tell you that they are larger than life--literally, since Athena must be seven feet tall--and more beautiful and striking than any mortal. I presume their nanotechnology and recombinant DNA labs made them that way. Athena combines qualities of feminine beauty, divine command, and sheer power that I didn't even know could exist before I found myself returned to existence in the shadow of Olympos.

And the passage from Ilium by Dan Simmons that actually sent me to my computer to create this entry...

I will do this thing. The decision comes with the exhileration of flying--no, not of flying, but in the thrill of that brief instance of zero gravity one achieves when throwing onself from a high place and knowing that there is no going back to solid ground. Sink or swim, fall or fly.
I will do this thing.

I can relate.
I've also had Illium sitting on my shelf for many months and that first paragraph pretty much sums it up.

My first thought: childbirth. It would be, of course.

Shows you how closely I've followed your LJ... :(
I didn't realize that you were in the family way. When is the little one scheduled to make his/her debut?

Mid-July. I'll be missing the Country Fair this year. First time ever, but it's a very good reason. :)

My pregnancy-related posts are all friends-only, and you are in my friends list.

Initial announcement was http://memegarden.livejournal.com/133911.html

Since then I've posted several updates on current conditions & events, and quite a lot of dreams, if your're interested in that sort of thing.

hello!

you seem interesting. I'm bored. interesting people alleviate boredom. therefore, I'm adding you. *cheeky grin*

I was reading an entry posted by a friend (4bitdecoder, and being bored, started clicking on the usernames of people I didn't know... which lead to david_lucifer, which lead to you... just in case the chain of events was important to you)
