Trippy, man!

I've been mining this essay by David Brin for quotes to use in a post I've been brewing up. Here's a little chestnut that stands alone quite nicely:
Picture some future time when thinking beings may occupy simulated software realms within some vast cybernetic space. Realms that emulate reality with fine attention to every detail. We don't yet know how far simulation can be extended, or whether there are inherent limits. Some very smart people believe there aren't, in which case there's no guarantee that you, reading this paragraph right now, aren't living in such a simulation.

What is reality? It's an old sophomoric conundrum, one that only gets more irritatingly relevant as time goes on. I fear it may become the cliche of the next century. Get used to it.

Nonsense! That couldn't possibly be true, or we'd start running into weird processor limitations when we looked hard enough, like maybe a speed limit on light, or not being able to measure both location and speed of small particles.

Re: Nonsense
You got me with "Nonsense!" Hackles went up, and I started composing a reply before I'd even read the rest of your message.

;)

BTW, I've been away from the online world for a while. I missed the announcement of your baby's birth. Yea! Hurray! And congratulations.
