Your belief that I would respond is a self-fulfilling prophecy which I’m happy to validate.

Right now I’m planning on moving to Japan (Tokyo) early next year. As someone who’s been there / done that, got any advice? Other than, say, renting from a yakuza to avoid paying key money? =)

I have nothing positive to say about Tokyo. Huge, sprawling, filthy city. Faux people wearing masks as far as you look. Genuine interaction occurs about as much as glimmers of enlightement among Republicans. Expensive as hell with an outrageously high cost of living. Extreme cultural egotism. They have a deeply entrenched group-think that their culture should be adopted by foreigners. They'll expect you to learn Japanese, integrate into Japanese culture, and will judge you based on your ability to do that. Many jobs require people to wear suits to work, etc.

I have about as much love for Japan as I do for Korea - somewhere just shy of none. At least Japan has some nice countryside working for it... and some great islands - and even Yonaguni!

Namaste.

Advice?
Well, I've never lived in Tokyo. I've flown in and out of Naritta airport, but I generally spend one night in Tokyo and then jump on the shinkansen and make for parts more agreeable. I don't want to throw cold water on your sense of anticipated adventure, but I do agree with most of ankh_f_n_khonsu has to say about Tokyo.

As for advice... hmmm... If you don't already know hiragana and katakana, learn them now. Learning the syllabaries will format your brain for prying rapid fire Japanese sentences apart into their constitutent words.

Take whatever opportunity presents itself to get out into the country.

You will meet lots of amazing people there, some of them will even be Japanese. A million people will ignore you. A hundred will be rude or condescending, a few will want to befriend you to practice their English. Let them. Some will just gravitate to you as friends because that's what people do. Look forward to that and don't let the million and the hundred get you down.

Do what you can to develop a thick skin. Nothing you can do to prepare for it, but you will be getting some novel experiencial insights into the topic of racism. Gambate, gaijin-san.
