If there are Americans clamoring to bomb Afghanistan back to the Stone Age, they ought to know that this nation does not have so far to go.

-Barry Bearak, author of the New York Times article, "Taliban Plead for Mercy to the Miserable in a Land of Nothing"

yup, the russians pretty much kakked anything of value, except for the big stone buddhas, which the taliban did away with themselves. however, in that same vein, the mouhajadein resisted the russians pretty well for about 20 or so years with a lot of that same nothing.

Statues
I got one unsubscribe request today. Aparently, someone doesn't want to hear that Afghanistan is already hell on earth and that our making things worse amounts to kicking a toothless, starving old dog.

I wanted to put the Buddhist statues in the graphic, as a reminder that we have little reason to respect the Taliban leaders. I hunted up several images of them, but by the time I shrunk the images down eough to fit into the one inch of vertical space in the banner graphic, they were unreccognizable.
