The Invisible Singularity

AGI springs into existence but keeps a low profile. The lag time involved in trying to effect change in the real world (or some other inscrutable motivation) prompts the AGI society of mind to focus its efforts on building some really kick-ass meta-worlds which bear truly excellent fruit. The meta-worlds prove so productive and fulfilling to their residents that the increasingly god-like AGIs never feel any need to interact with the glacial minds of meat monkey's stuck on stupid.

So do you figure there's an AGI running Blizzard Entertainment? ;)
Seriously, this is both an interesting idea and not such a bad deal, considering.

Singularity WoW!
I've never had a World of Warcraft account, but I think that if things in that virtual world move slowly enough to be comprehensible to human players, then it would seem like a frozen landscape to an AGI. Perhaps an AGI could bud a clone of itself to go down into human time and check things out, but by the time it was ready to reintegrate with it's parent and give a report, that parent would have lived through so much subjective time as to have no resemblance or sense of shared identity with the clone and might see "re-integration" as the equivalent of becoming infected with a retrovirus.

But yeah, all in all, the Invisible Singularity scenario is pretty benign from our perspective compared to a LOT of potential alternatives.

Re: Singularity WoW!
An AGI could simply control 1000 avatars in a virtual world to keep itself interested and gather information and plan on a grander scale.

SUCH a cool and succinct thought! I'd say it deserves a short story, but you've already done better than that here,
