C-Realm Podcast #94: Xen & the Art of Perfecting Humanity

KMO talks with author D.J. Solomon who reads a long passage from his novel from the future. Is the human soul amenable to improvement? If you were designing a plague that would remake humanity, what would you change? What would you leave untouched? Who would live, and who would die? How would men and women relate to one another on the morning after?

On the one hand, this was definitely my least favorite episode of the C-Realm so far. On the other hand, that was bizarre. Maybe it's just that Mr. Solomon in describing his future society blasts off to the realms of the wildly implausible so fast I just couldn't keep up. Still, I kept expecting it to go somewhere interesting, and it never did. I like scifi, so it's not that there's something wrong with a little applied phlebotinum in your setting (suspension of disbelief can trump GENES DON'T WORK THAT WAY DAMMIT). It's just that the answer to every "why" in Xen seems to be the same ("CHROMOSOME"), pushing out all the questions about realistic responses to unrealistic things.

What I'm trying to say is that interview made me curious about that book, but also made me suspect that I really wouldn't enjoy reading it.
