Episode 106: A Sense of Proportion

"C" stands for consciousness

106: A Sense of Proportion

Science writer John Horgan, author of Rational Mysticism, joins KMO in the C-Realm and takes a turn in the Total Perspective Vortex. Topics include the ego-inflation that overtakes some psychonauts, the nihilistic abuses of cult leaders, the unfulfilled promises of artificial intelligence, and the glorious visions of Singularitarians.

You can find John Horgan's Bloggingheads.tv interview with Eliezer Yudkowsky here:

You can find Eliezer's reflections on the encounter here:

Michael Anissimov described the Horgan/Yudkowsky piece as a "trainwreck." Checkitout:

Rational Mysticism
I read it a year or so ago, so it's not exactly fresh in my mind, but I got it off the shelf to have in hand when I talked to John, and I've been reading around inside of it a bit since then. Very enjoyable.

The Kid is Smart
No question about it.

One suspicion I have, though:

He admits that he grew up without a peer group his own age, and I imagine that having lacked such a peer group he never smoked pot or got into other activities which revealed to him in a visceral and unmistakable way that much of the wisdom handed down to him by adults consists of a pack of vicious lies, and so some pernicious falsehoods linger in his reality tunnel unquestioned and untested. Fortunately, the SIAI has Ben Goertzel on staff to "balance the ticket." (Ha ha! An electoral metaphor!)

Music
I curious what that song was you played at the start of the podcast. You played in the background late in episode 80 I think. I really like it.

Re: Music
You can find information about the theme song on the podcast section of C-Realm.com.

Most of the music that I use in between segments was recorded especially for the C-Realm Podcast by Dr. Richard Grossman who appeared in a very early episode of the show:
