1991 Ford Ranger

About half an hour ago I drove my 91 Ford Ranger to the post office. I came home, parked it as normal (in first gear with the parking break on) came inside, conferred with my wife, and went back to the truck to run another errand.

The ignition key now won't fit into the ignition.

I'm flummoxed.

Any suggestions or helpful resources?

The day before yesterday I was driving my '97 Mazda for the first time in a month. About an hour from home it died on me. I pulled over and white smoke started pouring from under the hood. I called roadside assistance and used the last of my cash to have it towed to a guy who has worked on it in the past. I haven't heard from him, and when I call him, I just get his voicemail. I was about to drive over there in the Ford Ranger when the weird business with the key not fitting into the ignition started. I'm now carless in suburbia. :(

When that ignition thing happened to me, the result was a new ignition lock, as the anti-theft mechanism had broken in the locked position.

Haven't experienced a Ford lockout before, but that white smoke from the Mazda is bad, bad news. Probably the head gasket.

It may not be economically salvageable, depending on the resale value. I'm really sorry.

I'm facing something similar. Right now the repairs to my little Honda exceed the value by 1.5 times. Ah, well.

Yeah, you need a new ignition thingy...that has happened to me before. It's not that expensive.
My van did that and I still managed to drive it for a while, but it was not reliable. If you woggle the steering wheel as you are trying to start it sometimes it will loosen up... as I recal the actual part was only about sixty dollars, but then if you can't replace it yourself you're gonna get nailed on labor.
