TOTD 02 Nov 2001

The world before flowers was sleepier than ours because, lacking fruit and large seeds, it couldn't support many warm-blooded creatures. Reptiles ruled, and life slowed to a crawl whenever it got cold; little happened at night. It was a plainer-looking world, too, greener even than it is now, absent all the colors and patterns (not to Mention scents) that flowers and fruits would bring into it. Beauty did not yet exist. That is, the way things looked had nothing to do with desire.

Flowers changed everything.

-Michael Pollan, The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World

To be overcome by the fragrance of flowers is a delectable form of defeat.

-Beverly Nichols

Giraffes & Elephants inspired this TOTD.

i have always wondered why roses dont smell so sweet in their bouquets these days...check out your local florist and you'd realise only a slice of their entire stock is fragrant...its a shame...I think it says something about us, human consumers...

the soul of a flower is its fragrance...its the fragrance...which is a major factor.... that attracts bees and birds ..who will in turn assist in pollination...flowers were not made to look pretty in our vases..the fragrance of blooms is the aphrodisiac...the sex toy of plant sex....we have grafted, modified, genetically altered the shape, size and colour of roses...we even have a 'blue' rose, for shits sake!! *we* select our flowers for how it looks...colours, shape...size..cost...

are women like flowers?
