Life without Facebook

The boys and I are in Arkansas, and we're staying at my mother's house. I call it my mother's house, but while my mother owns it, it's really my brother's domain. My kids call it Uncle Joe's house. He doesn't have a Facebook account and doesn't want one. He was so sick of other websites directing him to Facebook that he blocked Facebook at the router. He is disinclined to lift his No Facebook policy for even the brief stint of our visit.

I not only have a Facebook account, but the main online meeting place for C-Realm listeners is the Friends of the C-Realm group on Facebook. Everyday, several messages that people have sent my way via Facebook end up in my Gmail inbox. Even though I can't access Facebook, I can still see the text of the messages that Facebookers intended for me. Many of these messages take for granted that I can click on a link embedded in the email and see the Facebook context from which their comments arise and in which they make sense.

Two ironies:

1) I love to bitch about Facebook, and here I am missing it now that I don't have access to it.

and

2) All of my public posts to LiveJournal also get posted to my Facebook account, so while I don't have access to Facebook, most of the people who read this entry will have clicked through from its Facebook incarnation.
