In most musical instruments the resonator is made of wood while the actual sound generator is of animal origin. In cultures where music is still used as a magical force, the making of an instrument always involves the sacrifice of a living being. That being's soul then becomes part of the instrument and in the tones that come forth, the 'singing dead,' who are ever present with us, make themselves heard.

-Joscelyn Godwin

Music is the harmonious voice of creation; an echo of the invisible
world...

-Giuseppe Mazzini

This reminds me of Mickey Hart's story about a drum made of two skulls that he used to have...

These days, drumheads are made of Mylar, which isn't as responsive as animal hide (I have one of those southwestern frame drums, with a horsehide head; the difference is extremely noticeable). Imagine those big orchestral timpani with hide heads instead of plastic, the way the Ottoman armies used to use them...no wonder they scared the hell out of the Europeans.

The Spirit of the Instrument
Here is a picture of me doing a house blessing a couple of years ago with my elk hide barrel drum.

For travel I carry an artificial head Remo "Buffalo" drum, and it serves for sound but certainly does not have the same resonance for the work. Sometimes when I am shaking a rattle or beating a drum, smudging with a feather fan or casting bones I can feel the spirit of the fetishes more profoundly. You always pray for them to be present, but sometimes they make it manifestly clear that they are using you as a channel to communicate.

Re:
Nothing like that. I was pairing down my friends list, cutting folks whose posts I usually skipped over (you did not fall into that group) and folks who I didn't remember having seen anything from in a while (you did fall into that group.)

I've added you again.
