My Masterpiece

Sure, I cleaned it up a little for the "official version," but the essence is right here.

Storyboarding
Sure, I can think of a few handy tips. I'll put them in a new post so that I can edit it when I find typos, bad HTML tags and what not.

Re: Storyboarding
Have you checked to see if you can view the jpgs? I got nothing when I clicked on the links to the individual images.

Re: Storyboarding
Still no luck. I've tried several times over the last couple of days. Nada.

I don't think I'm going to craft that grand post I promised. Here's a summary of the thoughts I had on storyboarding.

First, I draw comics, which is a very different animal from storyboarding. The only storyboards I've done were for short animation projects, on I did in a SoftImage class back in the summer of '96. The other was for a flash animation project I was planning with Paul Gude. We didn't get past the storyboarding phase. The project was called "Scared of Monkey." Those unused ideas simmered in Paul's head, continuing to mutate. They eventually found expression in Paul's Super Rocket Monkey comic strip.

I posted the rough layout for my Super Rocket Substitute comic because I figured that nobody who hadn't already seen the finished product would have any clue as to what they were looking at. That's generally how I create my comics, in a sketchy short-hand that makes sense to me, and me alone. And if I don't go immediately from the rough preliminary version to working on final version, even I can't always interpret my short hand. I have notebooks full of cryptic scribblings that make no more sense to me than they would to the proverbial man on the street.

So, what does this have to do with storyboarding? Storyboarding, in most instances, isn't a not to oneself, but a note to someone else, giving them an idea of what they'll be creating. That means that the images have to be tighter and more accessible to other people. That said, it's the finished product that people will see, not the storyboard, so while it has to be clear, you also don't want to invest it with more than is necessary to get the film made.

What else? I'll be happy to talk about this in more detail.
