Nixon on marihuana (if only)

Thirty years ago, Richard Nixon created a commission to study the effects of marijuana and make policy recommendations. He packed the commission with die-hard drug warriors and encouraged them to denounce the dirty hippies and their marihuana.

The commission took a long look at the issue and announced, "Marihuana's relative potential for harm to the vast majority of individual users and its actual impact on society does not justify a social policy designed to seek out and firmly punish those who use it."

Nixon, of course, rejected the study and blasted its authors for their soft stance on pot and the political dissent Nixon thought it fueled. Since then 15 million Americans have been arrested for interacting with this plant. Read more.
