There's a level on which life might be perceived as a joke, on which it literally is a joke, and this bothers a lot of people. The trickster's function is to break taboos, create mischief, stir things up. In the end, the trickster gives people what they really want, some sort of freedom.

-Tom Robbins

If the joker is often cruel in disillusioning the idealist, he nevertheless performs a very important function right there by not letting the idealist bump his head against the stone wall of reality and receive a rudder shock.

-Lin Yutang

a completely irrelevant comment
I saw the movie The Sting today and I was kind of thinking along those lines. It's about grifters in the thirties who plan this huge scam and there's all of this murder and theft and stuff. The thrifters are the "good guys" and I was thinking about how when you're doing something to screw with the system it's almost a good deed because it's so nice to see the system being screwed with. So even though they're doing all of this awful shit, you still admire them.

Re: a completely irrelevant comment
So, I've tried twice now to type this faux condescending reply, but typing in the dark has its hazards. If either of the aborted messages I started to write make their way to your in-box, know that it was my intention to playfully mock you for your youth (I graduted high school in 1986) and then tell you how much I appreciated your comments.

I appreciate your comments.

I don't envy your youth, but I do celebrate it, honor it, and delight in it.

Take care.

Was what I said that dumb? I mean how do you know I'm younger than you? I could be ninety five.
My comment wasn't about age at all. Explain yourself.

Not at all.

I mean how do you know I'm younger than you?

I looked at your bio and took you at your word.

I could be ninety five.

But we both know that you aren't.

My comment wasn't about age at all. Explain yourself.

To quote Paul Gude, "I think I'm going to have to write a note explaining myself. Then again, such a note may not be possible."

My comments about age were flippant and nonsensical. Heck, you're probably too old to be my second wife. (That comment too, for the record, is flippant and nonsensical.)

Good night, Keshet.

Be well.

Love and age-blind respect.

The trickster is such a favorite with tribal people because he reflects the truth back at us; he is our mirror, our raven, our coyote... our buddha. He also reminds us to get out of our heads sometimes and think with our guts, genitals or feet ;-)

I think Tom Robbins is a bit of a coyote. I love his work. Vonnegut is another favorite for that reason, and Heinlein. Turn it upside down and shake it, and what doesn't stick isn't truth.

I like you, and today, I like what you said.

A more backhanded compliment I have never received ;-) Some days I don't like what I say, either.

I was interested to see you have cut your hair.

Same here.

I suspect that only sociopaths and politicians cast an uncritical eye over the entire corpus of their past utterances. Even though his words came around and bit him in the ass, I bet Slick Willy still loves the sound of his own voice when he watches the video of himself standing before the nation and telling us, "I did not have sex with that woman."
