I, Robot

I passed on I,Robot when it came out last summer. The reviewers all panned it, and the very notion that a story supposedly based on the cerebral writing of Issac Asimov would translate to the screen as a hyper-kinetic, action-packed blockbuster repleat with gun battles and car chases offended me. I never even would have put it in my Netflix queue, but someone at the office had the dvd, and I borrowed it along with the Bourne Supremacy.

Lara and I watched it last night, and to my surprise, I found myself enjoying it. Near the end, Lara asked me if the movie took as many liberties with the book as the Sci-Fi Earthsea miniseries did with Ursula K. LeGuin's novels. I had to laugh. The plot of I, Robot the movie had absolutely no connection to the collection of short stories by Issac Asimov collectively published under that same title. The only commonalities consisted of the title, the name of the US Robotics company, the character of Susan Calvin, and Asimov's famous three laws of robotics. The filmakers even admitted as much in the closing credits when they list the book by Asimov as having "suggested" the story told in the film.

Lara asked, "Should we feel guilty for enjoying this?"

"No," I said.

Yes you should feel guilty!!!! ;-)
Guilt! Guilt! Guilt!

It's not coming out on Netflix until Feb., but you may like "The Specials." It's no Shawshank Redemption, but it's a fun, quirky little movie about a third string superhero team on their day off. (no fighting, no special effects.)

no guilt
I've saved "The Specials" on Netflix. I'll check it out when it has been released. Thanks for the recommendation.

or, failing that...
I just shouldn't watch movies based on source material for which I have a soft spot. Of course, if I lived by that creed, I never would have seen either X-Men movie or the Lord of the Rings.
