Well, I've made the switch. Thanks to everyone who answered my call for information and opinions.

Ironically, I can't log into gmail this morning. I keep getting an error message that reads, "Oops... the system was unable to perform your operation [error code 766] Please try back in a few seconds."

I've been trying it every couple of minutes for the last 20 minutes.

Is this normal?

So, having made the switch, I'm still using Hotmail.

In answer to one question, no, I don't have anything against Yahoo. I've just never used their search engine. I used Metacrawler until I discovered Google, and I've used Google exclusively ever since. I do use Yahoo groups, but that's because they bought the outfit (whose name I don't even remember anymore) who started it after I signed up and started using the service regularly.

I've never run into that problem with Gmail (or any other, that I can remember).

I've never experienced such an error (or any error), but I've used a pop3 client exclusively since they made the service available.

well i personally have never used yahoo's SE as a matter of policy, although perhaps when convenient. i used to use their directory, back in the day, but now, to the extent that i ever use a conventional web directory, i use the ODP directory, in its various client incarnations. yahoo doesn't even put their directory on the home page any more, which is kind of sad—you have to really dig for it.

i use yahoo as my home page at work because it's less offensive and potentially incriminating than my lj, which i use at home, so i consider all of the yahoo services sort of just like these superfluous frills that i go back and forth through while checking my mail. it is one of my many news outlets, of course, and i play chess regularly, especially at work. it's like, i don't know, yahoo sucks but it's like having a news ticker on your mailbox in front of your house, you know. you go out in the afternoon to get your mail, and there's just randomly like walter cronkite's voice coming out of your mailbox or something, and like random crap like that. yuo can take or or leave it, and i often as not leave it, but i sort of like it, it's good to have all those sort of bells and whistles floating out there, in case they seem useful. good way to kill time, i guess. i mean sometimes i'll be on hold at work or something, and i'll just space out and start reading about like tom cruise's baby or soemthing, even though my god the very idea of it offends me, you know there's all this free information raining down on us these days i figure i might as well sop up as much of it as i can. it's better than just like staring at my cubicle wall, which i gather is what people used to do in the old days.

yahoo sucks though i know that.
