Flash: Prisoners encouraged to trade organs for time off sentence

Lawmakers are considering legislation that would let prisoners donate organs or bone marrow in exchange for time off their sentences.

A state Senate panel on Thursday endorsed creating an organ-and-tissue donation program for inmates. But legislators postponed debate on a measure to reduce the sentences of participating prisoners, citing concern that federal law may not allow it.

More than 95,300 Americans are awaiting an organ transplant, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network. About 6,700 die each year.

With more than 2 million behind bars in the US, this seems like the oportunity for a hotshot up-and-coming investment banker out to make a name for himself to create a whole new industry. The possibilities seem endless.

i cannot applaud this even though it means hope for the dying..because..first of all, is it worth letting out hardened criminals.

i wonder if those arrested on drug possession/selling convictions will be considered as they are not 'less hardened' than criminals..then i can only see even more stringent punitive laws against petty crimes/felonies will result in more inmates.

the whole is idea is not so much bizarre as it is perverse. very sick.

ok, i had to come back to comment again because now i am angry..wtf? are organs always accepted..what about the medical costs..what if the prisoner donor develops complications?

sometimes i think that in the land of the free, one isnt free to DIE! maybe a country that has an excellent record of caring for it's sick and infirm can make demands, although it may be unfair, that one doesnt own one's life..but this is too much in a country which has a shit medical care system. i suppose you dont own your life..your HMO or insurance company does...bravo there!

Aah! Larry Niven was right! (several of his books feature the harvesting of criminals' organs)

tugger'd been figuring that we'd get good at growing new organs before we'd get to that point.

organs grow themselves - in criminals
I interviewed Suzzette Haden Elgin a few weeks ago, but the digital gremlins ate the file, so our conversation never made it to the podcast. We'll be doing the whole thing over eventually.

Thanks for introducing me to her.
