Shaving with a Straight Razor

Now, if you pose the question, "Can you find videos of men shaving with straight razors on YouTube?" the obvious answer is, "Of course."

But until you actually watch one, you probably don't have much inkling of how captivating shaving demos can actually be.

I've been looking at old school shaving supplies, but if this site is any indication, they're very expensive:

Does anybody know of a cheaper way to get started?

you are still going to waste water and probably use not very bio-degradable soap/cream. Why not start growing a beard? You can just trim it with scissors in the worst (best) case.

Why not grow a beard
If I could move the whiskers on my lower neck up to fill the gaps in the beard on my face, I'd give it a go. Unfortunately, the older I get the more the place where my "facial" hair ends and my "chest" hair begins moves away from the category of obvious landmarks and toward the category of arbitrary lines established by treaty or convention. Sorta like the difference between the Eastern and Western borders of the state of Missouri.

Given that it takes on the order of 2,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef and that I eat almost no beef, I'm not sweating the small quantity of water I use to scrape the hair off my face.

Try eBay
... Specifically, search eBay for "Zeepk". I can't vouch for quality, but it might be cheap enough to warrant a trail run.

I'll give it a go. Thanks.

Re: Try eBay
Wow. Those are inexpensive. So cheap that I think I'd probably be more comfortable starting a little higher on the ladder. Thanks again.

Grow a beard, I mean if you are looking at all that hell in a hand basket? Shaving is pretty far down on the priority list.

hell in a hand basket
Under "hell in a handbasket" conditions, I'll join the legions of ZZ Top look alikes. I'm thinking more in terms of the present. I spend a LOT of money on those disposable razor cartridges. As pricey as those nice straight razors are, I bet I spend that much in a year or less buying packs of razor cartridges that basically come down to two bucks a cartridge.

Re: hell in a hand basket
Oh, okay...well yes that is quite sensible. I am with you on those disposable razors, they are obnoxious. I just stopped shaving, I have really soft hair anyway so I am not sure why I spent all those years doing it.
My granfather and uncles never used anything but a straight razor, and my daughter is a cosmetologist and that is what they use at the salon.

Could probably hook you up with a pro discount if you know exactly which razor you want.

Ever since that podcast, I've thought of you whenever I see shaving articles. And I think of "The Color Purple." And I wonder if you have pics of yourself with a beard. And I am amused to see you obsessing over the topic too. ;)

Trust Mantic, he knows what he is talking about. I made the jump to straights not too terribly long ago, and have not looked back. DO NOT BUY ZEEPK, they are trash and useless. You can get a shave ready razor from somebody at straightrazorplace.com for about $40 shipped. I have bought several this way, and all are very nice. I would also give Jim at vintagebladesllc.com a shot. I deal with him almost exclusively for my supplies. He will patiently answer any questions you have over the phone.
Join the forum straightrazorplace. There is a learning curve involved, but everything is much easier with that knowledge base at your back.
Not only is using a straight cheaper in the long run, it is far more enjoyable, turning the daily shave into a kind of zen ritual.

Enjoy the adventure, and good luck.

Zen ritual
That video was certainly mesmerizing.
