Michael Jackson

JHK on the death of Michael Jackson:
It's fascinating to follow the coverage of Michael Jackson's death, but especially the lavish tributes to his "genius" and general wonderfulness. He was, in fact, a monster, and an apt reflection of America's extreme collective cultural confusion. He was a distillation of the lies America tells itself. He was infantile, grandiose, horrifying, and probably dangerous. His "accomplishments" as a grown man amounted to little more than a half dozen popular songs. The arc of his life may have been tragic, but it was a tragedy of his own making. His sudden end brings to mind a remark Gore Vidal made upon hearing about the death of Truman Capote: "Good career move."

Yeah, Michael seemed like a mess of a human being living a horror show of a life. Still, I spent the day on the road yesterday driving to and from DC, and I heard lots of "Beat it," "Billy Jean," and "Thriller." Those were sure good songs, and the fact that they're from my high school years doesn't hurt. Funny thing is, I was listening to NPR for most of the drive. I can only imagine the Jackson-saturation that must reign on the lowest common denominator media at the moment.

But it sure did a great job taking Iran out of the news...

What is this "Iran" of which you write?

No, he didn't make himself; he was a bit of a Frankenstein. He did adapt himself a lot, and that was his doing, based in a great deal of self-loathing, I imagine... but you have to look to his family of origin, and thereby his karma, to what produced him. Like many child stars, he did not have a childhood to speak of, and lacking that natural and needed part of development, he was stunted and warped for the rest of his life. Had he not been so rich, he probably would have ended up homeless or in a mental health facility at some point, or dead a lot earlier from substance abuse.
