Free RPG?

So, I was sitting down at the Hippitat with three of the new apprentices, and one of them made a joke about his having armor class zero. One person present didn't get the reference, and so I launched into a long-winded explanation about the evolution of role-playing games from face to face group activities with paper and dice to things like Balder's Gate and World of Warcraft.

One of the apprentices said, "I bet you'd make a good game master."

Another asked, "Is there a chance we could play some games like that here?"

I told them that I didn't have any gaming stuff with me but that we could order something from Amazon and that it would be here in a few days. Being broke young hippies (suddenly I'm hanging out with broke young hippies - hurray!) the apprentices didn't like the idea of spending money. I'll spring for some dice, but I'm sure there are simple RPG games systems available on the internet.

Do you know of any?

What kind of campaign do you think I should run for them? Straight up Sword & Sorcery? Something Traveleresque? Maybe something along the lines of Call of Cthulu?

All suggestions and resulting discussion most welcome.

Edit: Another desired game characteristic besides thrift is ease. Newbie gamers and a GM who will need to learn the rules before demonstrating them.

Further edit: I've learned that GURPS Lite is available as a free download, so I'll probably use that for rules, but I'm still looking for suggestions as to genre and specific adventures.

Dunno about totally free, but I was just reading an article at CNN about WOTC promoting a new simple D&D for people with little time and/or money.

If you'd like to do sword & sorcery, classic 1st-ed AD&D has had the serial numbers filed off and is available for download.

Why not scour the craigslists for old games? A Diablo or even Diablo II could be got for free. Not as interactive as the others, but a good intro to armor, weapons and augmentations (especially D2).

One fave of mine was Total Annihilation. It's the only regret I have that I no longer run a Windoze machine, that I can not play it no more. Ah, that was a strategy game. We had head-to-head battles lasting hours. Getting into such a match was an escapist joy.

Acoustic Gaming
We're looking to go old skool. Unplugged. Paper and dice.
