218: Education is Where You Find It

http://crealm.libsyn.com/218_education_is_where_you_find_it

KMO reads from a John Taylor Gatto-inspired graduation address by Erica Goldson and from the blog of Dale Pendell. Later KMO hooks up with an old friend for a bull session in which two jaded Gen-Xers talk about "these kids today." Hilarity ensues.

Music by Sugaree, William Wardlaw, and Inspired Flight.

I'm currently in the midst of reading The Teenage Liberation Handbook and thinking a lot about unschooling. And that is a subject that never touched my mind until college, and that I have only really started to think about seriously now. So that Erica Goldson speech really struck home for me.

It's a hard subject for me to grapple with, for some reason. Maybe it's just the sinking suspicion that I sold my soul to the educational system. Maybe it's that it feels like one of those too-hot-to-handle political issues, one where I doubt that there will ever be any real agreement, where even bringing it up almost seems counter-productive. It seems to me like we'll never getting rid of grades, despite the mounds of evidence that they're counter-productive. And people still, with apparent seriousness, defend forcing children to memorize the times tables on the basis that forcing children to do unpleasant things in general builds moral character.

KMO -
I really appreciated your high school/college friend's commentary! Much appreciated clarity on many points. Would love to hear another conversation between the 2 of you.
