If you had to go an entire week without TV, music, or your mobile phone, which would you choose, and why?

Most weeks I don't watch any TV. On occasion, I will get up in the middle of the night (the Hughesnet bandwidth restrictions are lifted between 1-6 am) and watch an episode of something on Syfy Rewind. I checked last night for a new episode of Stargate Universe. There wasn't a new one, but there was a new episode of Caprica. I watched it and decided that, as much as I enjoyed Battlestar Galactica, Caprica isn't going anywhere remotely interesting. I think I'm done with it. I will be watching The Walking Dead if AMC puts it online, but since they've only made six episodes, most weeks there won't be anything there for me. In short, a week without TV is nothing out of the ordinary.

One of the nice things about living here at the ETC is that some really talented musicians come through. I've been privileged to hear some really excellent guitar playing and singing around the fire. I've record live performances down in the Green Dragon for use on the C-Realm and ETC podcasts, but that doesn't happen every week either, and so a week without music wouldn't be out of the ordinary. I made a mix CD for someone a little while back, and in selecting songs for that I listened to a lot of tracks from my long-neglected and much-diminished CD collection, but under normal circumstances, I rarely listen to recorded music except to select the musical interlude for that week's episode of the C-Realm Podcast. Aside from that, I could go a week without listening to music and not even notice.

As for my mobile phone, it doesn't ring here at the ETC. No signal. I can only use it when I leave here, and typically when I'm talking on it, it's either in the service of recording an interview or taking care of some business that is of no interest to me. People who know my habits and inclinations don't bother to leave me voicemail, so when I see that I have a new voicemail message, I know it's nothing I want to hear. I dread checking voicemail and will happily leave messages unplayed for weeks. Interviews can be recorded face to face, and that is my preferred mode. So, while I rarely if ever go a week without using my phone, provided I'm not broke down on the side of the road and needing to call for assistance, I wouldn't miss it. (When I'm traveling, the phone becomes essential.)

The best thing I get from my phone is that it allows me to talk to my kids, but that doesn't happen every week. Since my mobile doesn't work here, and I can't dial long distance on the landline, I have to wait for my ex-wife to call me and put the boys on. It's something that we have to arrange by email or text message, and it doesn't happen very often.

The question seems to assume that TV, music, and mobile telephony are integral to the life of someone who maintains a LiveJournal account. They once were for me, but no longer. And I don't miss them.
