Color Me Flabbergasted

Incredulous, disgusted and irritated. WTF?

Facebook presents me with the following when I go to their website:

I'm not of a mind to click that little check box. I have over thirteen hundred Facebook "friends." How many of them could I possibly "know?" As I understand it, Facebook thinks I can "know" up to five thousand people. Absurd.

This seems like getting a speeding ticket for doing 60 mph in a 55 zone when the bulk of the traffic is flowing at 75.

Seriously. What the fuck is this?

*Sigh.* Yet another reason for me to put down the F@c$book and slowly back away.

It's this anti-spam feature, probably. You either friended someone who viewed that request as spammy/annoying or the other person was confused about how that feature works.

Better advice than "only send friend requests to someone you know" is "only send friend requests to someone you expect will accept your friend request".

Overall, I'm glad Facebook has that feature. At least, having random accounts friend me on Facebook for spammy reasons is much rarer than such accounts following me on Twitter, where that's a constant nuisance.

ETA: In other words, checking that box would be another example of "agreeing" to something a company says where neither is the company saying something with a close correspondence to reality nor is the "agreement" likely to be that meaningful. On the other hand, if you really want to leave Facebook over that sort of thing, I suppose I shouldn't object...
