What is a rebel? A man who says no, but whose refusal does not imply a renunciation. He is also a man who says yes, from the moment he makes his first gesture of rebellion.

-Albert Camus

The True Rebel never advertises it. He prefers his joy to Missionary Work.

-Lew Welch

Y'know, I think this is why I always felt mildly suspicious of people who go, "HEY! LOOK AT ME! I'M *DIFFERENT*! I'M SUCH A REBEL!"

Display behavior, maybe?

Systemized rebellion is simply another form of conformity... sometimes the most insidious kind.

Re: Rebellion
Ah... got this quote in the mail today, thought it might be "relevant" ;-)

"When people are free to do as they please, they usually imitate each other."

Re: Rebellion
Good one.

Here's another:

Without rationality you have two choices: you can follow the leader and obey the prescriptions of others; or, you can follow your impulses--do what "feels right"--a choice that more often than not leads back to the first.

Re: Rebellion

That is the question, isn't it... is it a matter of ambition or stupidity to insist on having "your own" ideas?

If it is true that there is "nothing new under the sun" then we are all copying someone, whether we are aware of it or not.

Parker J. Palmer: kind, rational, rebellious.
Speaking of rebels, I noticed before that you have Parker J. Palmer on your interests list. I don't know him well through his books, but I've met and talked with him in person a few times and he's got a kind but truly 'rebellious' attitude toward many of our society's traditional stigmas.

When I was in my college's student government and leadership panel, I got to sit with him and a small group and discuss life and philosophy on a few occasions, and while I was writing for the college paper I got to interview him in length. He actually sent me one of his books but I never read it! It's still on the shelf collecting dust. Kinda feel bad about that. Hmm. Maybe I'll open it up soon.
