Getting Settled

We sold our house in the US, sold what we could, stored a few items and gave away everything that we weren't taking with us. Even so, we weren't traveling light. I'm not sure how many different hotels we've stayed in since we left the States, but it was getting to be a real drag moving our mountain of luggage every few days.

Now we have an apartment in South Fremantle, Western Australia. It's a furnished place, though it required a trip to Target to deck it out in truely liveable fashion.

We had a rental car for several days, and I'm glad as there's no better way to learn the layout of a new city than to explore it by car. I dropped the rental off this morning. Now it's time to get a feel for getting around on foot and using the local mass transit.

Yesterday I made an appointment to meet with a Kung Fu/Tai Chi instructor and get an introductory lesson to see if that's the physical activity of choice for me here. I want to learn to surf, but surfing requires fitness, so I've got to get on some regular schedule of exercise before I can get on a board out in the water. I guess I should make sure I'm still a reasonably strong swimmer as well.

I'm finding it refreshingly novel to be in a place where I can understand (for the most part) what the locals have to say. As in most places, the men seem to mumble and slurr their words more than the woman do, so I've had the most difficulty understanding when talking to men.

Anyway, I'm in an internet cafe for backpackers. When I get home, I'm going to call Telstra (the local telephone monopoly) about getting telephone and internet service hooked up at our apartment. That, along with a wall adapter for my laptop computer will put me back in business in terms of getting images and comics posted to the web on a regular basis.

how'd you do that?
I didn't know Australia would just up and let you move in like that.

Re: how'd you do that?
Oh yeah. As long as you're from the right country, have no crimal record, and can prove you've got the financial juice to keep yourself afloat, the door stands wide open. It's the refuge types who have an uphill battle and many hoops to jump thru and mixed metaphores to contend with.
